facebook marketing - fan page or personal page

Facebook marketing is an extremely powerful way to build your business on the Internet. There are so many different opportunities and possibilities that you can use to grow a business.

But the questions that a lot of people ask – “do I need a fan page?“, “what should I use – a fan page or personal page?“.

When I started digging Facebook marketing myself, I had no idea what a fan page even was, I only had a personal page, and I was trying to make some moves.

Then I dove into training on how to use Facebook Marketing, and I did setup a fan page – I just followed the directions. So at that time I was trying to build both – my fan page and my personal page (which never really worked out, because I wasn’t focused on one thing in the beginning).

So in this post I wanna give you a comparison between a personal page and a fan page, and then you can decide which one you’re going to stick to.

1.On a personal page according to Facebook rules, you are not allowed to conduct any type of business. Here’s something scary that I heard what Facebook can do if they see that people don’t like what you’re sharing by hiding your content, they will turn your personal account into a Fan Page. I’m not 100{f3c65145988e2e59c83e583cebd868b487b41a6223d103cb7159bbb31ea456e1} sure of that, but that’s what I’ve heard. So you better not spam your business opportunity links, or any of that stuff.

Use your personal page not to promote a business, use it to provide content. Social media was created to socialize with people, not to pitch them your offers. Use your personal page to share lifestyle, to share some business tips (it’s not prohibited, because it’s content). If you have a ton of friends and family that are outside of your business, then you may wanna create a new account, and start from scratch. You can share blog posts as well (that’s what I do, and typically those are the only links that I put on my personal page).

Facebook Marketing Explained

2.On your Facebook fan page you can do all of your business (that’s what this page is meant for). But I gotta warn you – don’t over-post about your business, or MLM, or make money online. Facebook doesn’t like it in their ads (if you’re gonna do them, keep that in mind), and it will look like you’re desperate to make sales. You HAVE to provide content anyways. You can post promotions (you definitely should be), but don’t over-do them. Always follow the 80-20 rule: 80{f3c65145988e2e59c83e583cebd868b487b41a6223d103cb7159bbb31ea456e1} of content, 20{f3c65145988e2e59c83e583cebd868b487b41a6223d103cb7159bbb31ea456e1} of promotion. That way people will be more attracted to YOU, because you’re not trying to sell them a bunch of stuff.

3.Here’s a question that I get a lot – “should I start a Facebook fan page?“. And my answer is “Absolutely YES“. Why? because this way you will be able to do advertising, and even if you don’t do them at this point, you’re gonna do them later down the line. Facebook advertising platform is hot, because almost every person you know is on Facebook, and you can get ridiculously targeted if you do the ads right.

4.Another thing is on your personal page you have a limit of 5,000 friends (you can have followers, but the limit is still there), and on fan page you can have as many fans as you can get. There are no limits. The only problem with fan page (if you decide to market primarily with it) is that you can’t send private messages to people (active prospecting), you can only reply to messages that you get, but you can’t initiate the conversation yourself

So if you’re looking to start building your audience actively, I highly recommend to use a personal page, that’s what I’m using right now, and it works GREAT! And on your fan page Facebook is pushing you to create Likes Ads Campaigns, where you basically pay for likes to get to your fan page. And then you can market to these people and deliver content, and target your advertising to these people.

Final Points:

So there you have it. Now it’s totally up to you to decide which one of Facebook marketing ways you wanna use. Both of them work awesome as long as you are consistent. So if you choose a fan page and you wanna focus on paid advertising, then by all means do that, but you gotta be super consistent with ads. You can’t run a few ads today and not do anything tomorrow. Facebook ads don’t work like that. You gotta test, track, tweak and scale them! That’s the only way to do it.

But if you’re not into advertising, that’s okay! Choose your personal page – that’s what I do – and you can prospect people actively. And if you’re not using Facebook marketing strategies, why not? It’s time to get started!
