How do you create a successful blog from scratch?

What components do you need to have in place in order to turn your blog into a money making machine?

If you are in network marketing, internet marketing niche, this will help you a lot. And even if you’re in any other industry, like fitness, etc. this will give you ideas on how to build a successful blog.

1.The purpose of a blog is to generate leads. So you gotta have an opt in form for people to fill out. Most websites (even online stores) have a newsletter for people to subscribe to. Don’t even launch your blog without having an opt in form first. 

Here’s the thing – newsletter don’t really work these days. People are already subscribed to thousands of newsletters. You have to make yourself stand out somehow. And the only way to do so is to create a lead magnet – a free giveaway, either a PDF report, a cheat sheet or a video training. Something of value, that’s going to solve your audience’s problems. 

2.Have an autoresponder. I personally use AWeber, you can get your free 30 day trial here. Once people actually opt in, you have to follow up with them. How do you send an email to thousands of people with only one click? With an autoresponder. This tool is a MUST HAVE.

3.Put yourself out there. I hope you are branding YOU on your blog, and not your company. So make sure you put your face out there. People have to get to know you, so whenever they go to your blog, they see YOU. Have a branded header created that will appear on top of your site. Also have a tagline that tells people who you are. My tagline is “Helping Entrepreneurs Create a Successful Brand Online Using Social Media & Blogging”. Take some time to figure out your tagline, and put it on your header.

4.Be strategic with your blog posts. Always create content on purpose, with an end goal in mind. What do you want your audience to do next? Do you want them to leave your site, or do you want them to subscribe to your newsletter? Always have a clear call to action after each blog post. And not only there – put a call to action on the sidebar of your blog (or have a couple of them). Make sure your call to action is visible to your audience, because you have to direct people.

5.Let people comment. Make sure you have WordPress comments enabled, so that people can leave their comments, because Google loves it. When they see you have comments, your site gets more credibility, and it will be put higher in search engines. I don’t recommend putting Facebook comments, because Google spiders don’t crawl those, and they don’t add any SEO juice to your blog. 

6.Social media sharing. If you wanna get more traffic to your blog (which I’m pretty sure you do!), get yourself a plugin that will enable your blog visitors share your content. The ones I use personally are Monarch and Jetpack. There are also a ton of other plugins that you can use, such as Digg Digg, SumoMe. Again, Google likes it when they see your content is being shared. That means it’s relevant to your audience. 

7.Your signature. Make sure that under each blog post you have a signature, with your email address, Skype, and possibly phone number for people to reach out to. Your audience have to know that you’re a real person, and they can get in touch with you.

8.P.S. Line. This is something that I encourage you to have under every single blog post. It can be one of your call to actions, or it can be the only one. I’ve tested this myself, and usually I only have a P.S. line and it works like magic! I get a lot of leads just from this little sentence. Make sure this P.S. line is actually relevant to your blog post. 

9.Blog Menu. This is one of the most critical components to run a successful blog. People see your menu all the time, and yes, they go through it. Make sure you have “About Me” section, where people can learn more about you and what you do. Another page you need to have in place is “Work With Me”. When people are attracted to you and they trust you, they will wanna find a way to work with you. Have that page created as well. If you are using any tools, that you have affiliate links for, create a “Resources” page and put it in the menu. 

10.Search bar. If you have a lot of blog posts, that’s something you definitely wanna have in place, so people can search your blog for keywords and topics that they are interested in learning more about. 

11.Your sidebar. I don’t ever recommend putting a lot of stuff there, because if you have way too many banners, people won’t click on any of them. Have one main clear call to action for people with your core lead magnet. I also have my social media profiles for people to connect with me there, and some of the featured post to check out. You can put your fan page feed on the sidebar as well. If you don’t have it yet, no big deal. The less – the better. 

12.The footer. That’s the place not a lot of bloggers use, but you can put either your contact information, and some posts, or your social media feeds. 

13.Home page. It’s not necessary if you’re just starting out, but it’s great to have it. That’s the page where you can put a video of yourself welcoming people to your blog with a call to action for them to opt in to your list and get your free giveaway.
